ART GILLIAM AND WLOK ARE BREAKING NEW GROUND-AGAIN

WLOK RADIO HAS BECOME THE ONLY BLACK OWNED FM RADIO STATION

IN MEMPHIS.  ON JANUARY 10, WLOK BEGAN BROADCASTING  ITS GOSPEL

FORMAT ON 104.9 FM IN ADDITION TO ITS TRADITIONAL DIAL POSITION

OF 1340 AM.  THE NEW FM STATION IS BEING PROMOTED AS FM 105.  THE

STATION'S SLOGAN HAS BECOME "FM 105, AM 1340 WLOK - STILL A FAMILY TRADIITION."

 WLOK PRIMARILY PRESENTS A TRADITIONAL BLACK GOSPEL

MUSIC FORMAT.  IT ALSO AIRS TALK SHOWS EACH WEEK HIGHLIGHTING

AND EXAMING COMMUNITY ISSUES AND OPPORTUNITIES.

 

CITY LEADERS, YOUTH MEET TO DISCUSS CRIME SOLUTIONS

MEMPHIS CITY LEADERS AND YOUTH MET THIS WEEKEND TO DISCUSS WAYS TO END

THE CITY'S VIOLENCE.  THE "HEAR ME OUT YOUTH FORUM' GAVE TEENS AND YOUNG

ADULTS AGES 14-21  A CHANCE TO AIR THEIR CONCERNS AND SOLUTIONS WITH SOME

OF THE CITY'S TOP BRASS, INCLUDING POLICE DIRECTOR MIKE RALLINGS.  ONE

PARTICIPANT SAID HE WANTED TO KNOW WHAT'S BEING DONE TO HELP YOUNG

PARENTS IN THE CITY.  IKE GRIFFITH, A SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE MAYOR, SAID

THE EVENT WAS TO GIVE THE YOUTH A VOICE.  GRIFFITH SAYS, "WE WANTED TO

GIVE THEM THAT VOICE, JUST FOR THEM, JUST THE YOUTH, NO PARENTS, TO GIVE

US THEIR VOICE ON THINGS THAT ARE PLAGUING THEM OR HINDERING THEM." 

THE NEXT YOUTH FORUM IS SCHEDULE FOR SATURDAY, JANUARY 28TH , 10 A.M. -12 NOON

AT ONE ACCOR MINISTRIES, 1708 VERA CRUZ ST.

 

HEAL THE HOOD PROGRAM AIMS TO CUT DOWN YOUTH

VIOLENCE

OUT OF 224 HOMICIDES THIS YEAR IN MEMPHIS, MANY OF THE VICTIMS AND SUSPECTS

HAVE BEEN UNDER THE AGE OF 18.  THAT IS WHY THE MEMPHIS SHELBY COMMISSION

IS PARTNERING WITH A HICKORY HILL FOUNDATION TO HELP CURB THE ISSUE OF

YOUTH VIOLENCE IN MEMPHIS.  THE HEAL THE HOOD FOUNDATION ALREADY PROVIDES

A SAFE PLACE FOR KIDS IN HICKORY HILL TO RECEIVE MENTORSHIP.  TUESDAY

MORNING, THE MEMPHIS SHELBY CRIME COMMISSION ANNOUNCED A PARTNERSHIP

WITH THE HEAL THE HOOD FOUNDATION TO HELP THEM IN THEIR ATTEMPT TO SAVE

AS MANY YOUNG PEOPLE LIFE OF VIOLENCE.  THE HOURS AT THE HEAL THE HOOD

FOUNDATION ARE 3pm to 7 pm, MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY.

TO 5 PM AND JANUARY 24-26 BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 7 AM AND 5 PM  BAR CODED

APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED ONLINE, BY MAIL OR IN PERSON BY 5 PM ON FRIDAY,

JANUARY 27TH.
